What is an office panic button?
An office panic button is a fixed, silent switch mounted where staff actually sit, under the reception desk, inside the HR office, at the front counter. One press alerts your response team instantly, without a phone, an app or any visible movement, and can escalate to a building-wide response through the PA speakers and message boards your workplace already has.
The Office Reality
Workplace violence walks in through the front desk.
Most office incidents are not random. They arrive at predictable desks: the receptionist who refuses an entry, the HR manager delivering a termination, the administrator handling a furious visitor. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has tracked workplace violence as a leading cause of occupational death for years, and the posts that absorb it first are the fixed ones, staffed by the same people, in the same seats, every day. A workplace panic button does not change that geography. It makes sure the person sitting in it is never more than one press from help.
California wrote this logic into law: SB 553 has required nearly every employer in the state to run a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan since July 2024, including a working alert and response element, and regulators elsewhere are treating it as a template. Our guide to workplace panic button requirements across OSHA and state laws covers the compliance picture in detail.
Placement
Where office panic buttons belong.
- Reception and front desks. The public face of the building and the first point of escalation, staffed around the clock.
- HR offices and termination rooms. Where the hardest conversations happen, often behind a closed door, often one-on-one.
- Meeting and interview rooms. Private rooms where a staff member sits with a visitor they cannot screen in advance.
- Executive assistant stations. Frequently alone at the front of an executive suite, controlling access to it.
- Administrative and accounting offices. Cash handling, payroll records and disputes over money.
- Lone late workers. The last person in the building, the empty-floor walk to the elevator or the parking lot.
One pattern matters more than any single room: the desks that need a button are the ones a visitor can predict. If someone can walk in knowing exactly where your staff sits, that seat is a flashpoint, and the walkthrough maps them all before any hardware is quoted.
The Press
Silent at the desk, immediate everywhere else.
Discretion is the point. A panic button for office use is mounted under the work surface and pressed with a knee or a hand that never leaves the desk: no reaching, no visible movement, no escalation in front of the person causing the problem. The alert itself is silent at the source. What happens next is your configuration: a discreet notification to security or management, or a full facility response with PA audio and LED board instructions, decided per button, not per building.
Our under desk mounting is part of the walkthrough itself: we position every switch where the seated person can reach it without looking, wired into the same response chain as the rest of your panic button system.
Scale
Office panic alarm options, from one desk to every floor.
Deployments scale by post, not by headcount. A single fixed button at reception covers the flashpoint most offices actually have. Larger floors add buttons at HR, meeting rooms and secondary desks, all reporting into the same alert path. Every configuration is owned hardware with published starting prices and no monthly fees, not a per-user subscription that grows every time you hire.
If your risk spans more than office desks, retail counters, warehouses, clinics, public windows, the business panic button systems page covers the multi-industry commercial picture. This page stays focused on the office: desks, doors and the people who staff them.
